Whilst aviation is such an exciting and rewarding industry to be a part of, it can also come with long hours, changing schedules, fatigue and time away from home. Looking after your mental wellbeing is just as important as looking after your physical health, and often, it is the small daily habits that make the biggest difference.

Here are a few simple ways aviation professionals can support their mental wellbeing both in the air and on the ground:

Create small routines

Even with unpredictable rosters, small routines can help create a sense of balance:

  • Morning stretches before duty

  • Packing your flight bag the night before

  • Listening to music or podcasts during commutes

  • Having a consistent wind-down routine after flying

Stay connected

Being away from home frequently can sometimes feel isolating:

  • Make time to check in with family and friends

  • Stay connected with crew colleagues

  • Plan social time on days off

  • Don’t underestimate the value of a simple conversation

Prioritise rest and recovery

Fatigue can impact both physical and mental wellbeing:

  • Protect your sleep where possible

  • Allow yourself proper rest on days off

  • Avoid overcommitting during busy roster periods

  • Listen to your body when you need to slow down

Fuel your body well

Nutrition and hydration can have a huge impact on mood and energy:

  • Keep healthy snacks in your flight bag

  • Stay hydrated throughout the day

  • Try not to rely solely on caffeine during long duties

  • Prioritise balanced meals when possible

Find moments to reset

Small mindful habits can help reduce stress during busy days:

  • Take short walks during layovers

  • Practice deep breathing before flights

  • Spend time outdoors when you can

  • Limit screen time before sleep

Remember you are not alone

One of the most important things is recognising when you may need support:

  • Speak to trusted friends or colleagues

  • Use wellbeing resources available through your company or organisation

  • Be open about mental wellbeing conversations

  • Support others around you too

Mental wellbeing in aviation isn’t about jazz hands and being positive all the time, it’s about building healthy habits that help you navigate a demanding lifestyle in a sustainable way.
