Networking- but make it not awkward...

Networking often gets a bad reputation for being forced or uncomfortable, but in reality, it’s simply about building genuine human connections. In aviation and beyond, the strongest opportunities rarely come from perfectly rehearsed conversations, but from authentic interactions over time.
One of the easiest ways to reduce awkwardness is to shift the focus away from “impressing” and toward curiosity. Asking simple, open questions like “What led you into aviation?” or “What do you enjoy most about your role?” helps create a natural flow in conversation and takes the pressure off yourself.
Preparation can also make a big difference. Attending events, airshows, or industry talks with a few conversation starters in mind can help you feel more confident walking into a room. Even something as simple as introducing yourself and mentioning your current training, role, or interest is enough to break the ice.
It’s also important to remember that networking doesn’t only happen in formal settings, some of the most valuable connections are made in casual moments or through shared experiences. Staying open and approachable in everyday environments can be just as powerful as attending structured events.
Finally, follow-up is where real connection is built. A short message after meeting someone, whether on LinkedIn, email or social media, helps turn a brief conversation into a lasting relationship.
Networking doesn’t need to feel polished or perfect. At its core, it’s simply about showing up, being curious, and open- the rest will happen on it's own!
