The Pressure to Have It All Figured Out

We live in a world where it can feel like everyone else has their life figured out. Someone has landed their dream job, another has just qualified, someone else is travelling the world, while another seems to be effortlessly climbing the career ladder. And when you're building a career in aviation, it can be easy to feel like you're falling behind.

But the truth is: you don't have to have it all figured out.

Aviation is an industry full of different paths, opportunities and unexpected turns. Your first job doesn't have to be your forever job, and the career you imagined at 18 might look completely different by the time you're 25, 30 or beyond. Changing direction isn't failure; sometimes, it's how we discover what we actually want.

It's also important to remember that we rarely see the full picture of someone else's journey. We see the promotion, the new job title or the cockpit photo, but not the applications that were rejected, the exams they struggled with, the opportunities they missed or the moments when they questioned themselves.

Instead of asking, “Where should I be by now?”, try asking, “What is the next step I can take?”

That might mean applying for a new role, reaching out to someone for advice, learning a new skill, attending an event, finding a mentor, or simply giving yourself permission to explore.

Your career doesn't need to be a perfectly planned route. Think of it more like a flight plan: you can have a destination in mind, but sometimes the route changes. Weather, circumstances and new opportunities can all influence where you go next.

So, if you're feeling like you should have everything figured out by now, take a step back. You are not behind. You are building a career, discovering yourself and finding your own path.
